Engineering a better world
OUR PLANET DOESN'T NEED MORE HEROES. IT JUST NEEDS MORE ENGINEERS.
OUR PLANET DOESN'T NEED MORE HEROES. IT JUST NEEDS MORE ENGINEERS.
Ready to stand up for the environment? You don’t have to be a hero or even some hotshot VIP. You just need a healthy dose of curiosity and determination.
The environment is everyone’s responsibility. We think that’s especially true for engineers. The world needs a new generation of engineers who will reinvent the future.
Engineering is where you can transform your thirst for discovery into positive action. Turn your drive and determination to do more for the environment into a meaningful career.
Let’s start by making sure we’re all on the same page:
This is what happens when we produce more carbon dioxide (greenhouse gases) than the planet can handle. Essentially, we’re causing a system overload.
It’s the total amount of greenhouse gases a person produces that remains trapped in our atmosphere. It’s kind of like leaving the shower on in a bathroom with no door or fan to let the steam out.
It means harnessing the planet’s resources without ruining everything for future generations. Who really wants to move to Mars?
It’s how we find better, smarter alternatives to the actions that are killing our planet. No, it’s no easy feat!
THE POWER OF TINY INCREMENTS
But we can save it, bit by tiny bit. By making the choice late one night to give that new class a try. Or turning your passion into an exciting career in engineering.
The best thing about engineering is that you can start working on projects that help the planet, right from the start. Don’t wait until you’re old and grey to make a difference.
Take a seat on a council, like the Environment and Climate Change Youth Council, that advises governments on environmental issues. One of the current members just happens to be an engineering student!
CEGEPs, universities, and organizations such as Engineers Without Borders offer exciting fellowships and opportunities to make an impact and build your career.
CEGEPs and universities are always on the lookout for passionate young climate champions like you to be part of their environmental committees. Ask them what you can do to help!
So why choose engineering?
Because you want a career where you have the power to build a better world. Because you want to work on real-world projects and make a positive, measurable impact.
Public transportation, water purification systems, energy-efficient buildings; you name it, it’s possible. To design systems and infrastructure that benefit millions of people.
such as floating solar, carbon-neutral concrete, and carbon capture stations. To become a part of creating new technologies,
But above all, in engineering, you can imagine the possibilities, think big (or infinitely small), and drive innovation. Talk it over with your teachers, your friends and loved ones, or your guidance counsellor at school. Because there’s definitely a place for you in engineering.
AND INFINITE POSSIBILITIES
From bridges to microchips, engineering lies behind the great inventions that shape the world—yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
Here are some examples of engineering projects that show just how far your ideas can take you.
Even small choices can open the door to projects that transform the world, whether it’s helping the environment, designing tomorrow’s technologies, or building sustainable infrastructure.
