How to become an engineer

You are in secondary school

ALL PATHS TO ENGINEERING START HERE!

If you are in secondary school, ask your school guidance counselor for more information. That way, you will know which courses you need to take to be accepted into an engineering program at CEGEP. Taking these courses will open many doors to an exciting profession for you… engineering!

At secondary school, you will need to pass the following courses:

  • Secondary 5 TS or SN or 536 Mathematics or the equivalent
  • Secondary 5 or 534 Chemistry or the equivalent
  • Secondary 5 or 534 Physics or the equivalent

Then, enrol in a CEGEP natural science or science program, a literature or art program, or in a collegial technical degree program (depending on the institution). In fact, many technical college degree (DEC) programs can qualify you for a university engineering program!

At CEGEP, you will need to pass the following courses or their equivalents:

  • Mathematics NYA, NYB, NYC (or 103-77, 203-77, 105-77)
  • Physics NYA, NYB, NYC (or 101, 201, 301)
  • Chemistry NYA (or 101)

It is important to check with your guidance counselor to make sure that you are taking the right courses because each university and its engineering programs are different and exceptions may apply.

After CEGEP:

  • Earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering (at a recognized academic institution).
  • Become a candidate to the engineering profession (CEP).
  • Accumulate 24 months of relevant experience and acquire the skills you need for the profession.
  • Pass the professional exam.
  • Obtain your engineer’s permit.
