A challenge in which students simulate a sorting facility by designing an electromagnet capable of separating ferromagnetic metals from other materials. They’ll experiment with magnetism and explore how electromagnets are used in real-world technologies such as the electromagnetic cranes found in recycling centres.

Required materials
- Two containers with metal paper clips and other non-ferromagnetic materials
- Insulated electrical wire (~60 cm)
- Threaded rod or iron/nickel nail
- Size D battery, 1.5 V
- Battery holder
- Alligator clips
