A Genius Idea to get out of the woods

A technological challenge in which students design prototype medical devices for an injured person, including a finger splint, a homemade stethoscope, and a makeshift stretcher. The activity explores material properties, sound propagation, and principles related to the human body through a design process inspired by biomedical engineering.

Required Materials
  • Rigid materials: craft sticks, cardboard, straws, bottles
  • Absorbent materials: tissues, sponges, wadding
  • Linking materials: elastics, twine, pipe cleaners
  • Funnels or cones
  • Flexible tubing
  • Balloons or latex/nitrile gloves
  • Brooms and towels for the stretcher
