Show your inner engineer and light up the world
- Secondary 1
- Secondary 5
45–60 minutes
Technological challenge in which students explore ways to improve a lighting system inspired by the “Litre of Light” project. They’ll experiment with optic fibres to direct light into a room. This activity explores the propagation of light and reflection and refraction.

Physical principles covered
- Diffusion of light
- Reflection
- Refraction
- Total internal reflection
- Optic fibres
- Propagation of light
Required Materials
- Cardboard box
- Bottle of water
- Optic fibres
- Flashlight or smartphone
- Adhesive tape
- Light meter or smartphone with a lux meter app
